Following a monumental investment of some $300 million by Riot Games parent company, Tencent Holdings and partner firm BAMtech, the two firms are building an application purely for streaming games of League of Legends. This is designed to compliment existing streaming services like Twitch and Youtube, providing a singular place for fans of the game to congregate to view all of the action in the Summoner's Rift.
"Our goal has always been to build League of Legends into a major global sport. We want our sport to be funded by itself and we think this deal is going to help us get there," Riot eSports director Jarred Kennedy said in a chat with
While the investment costs for such a venture seem extraordinary considering the pre-existence of many other streaming platforms, purportedly BAMTech plans to make this money back through selling advertising on the platform - so it's not even like fans can expect a less ad-heavy experience than its contemporaries.
Still, with millions of viewers regularly tuning in to some of the game's biggest exploits, it's no wonder that ever more companies want to get in on the action.
