League of Legends still more popular than top 100 Steam games

Although we know League of Legends and its MOBA brethren aren't everyone's cup of tea, it is sometimes worth putting into perspective how big and popular the game really is. In short, it's bigger than the top 100 Steam games combined.

DotA 2 is a huge game. So is Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Combined they are easily the two biggest games on Steam and have been for some time. At the time of writing more than 800,000 people are playing and at their busiest, they have more than 1.5 million concurrent players together.

That's a lot of people, but it doesn't even come close to League of Legends.

At its busiest period over the Christmas holidays, Steam hit a new record, with more than 12 million people gaming away on its various servers. That's great and does beat the only League of Legends figures we have, which paint it at having 7.5 million concurrent players and more than 27 million per day. Each and every day.

And those figures are from 2014.

There are other huge games that dwarf Steam stats too. World of Warcraft still nails at least five million adventurers to their seats for extended periods of time each month and Hearthstone has upwards of 40 million accounts - though not everyone there are regular players.

It's worth remembering these stats, as it's easy to think that Steam is the be all and end all of PC gaming, but it certainly isn't.
