Although Konami might have severed all ties with the original Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima, going so far as to remove his name from the last game's marketing, that doesn't mean the series is done. It owns the rights and it's going to use them.
With that in mind, it has a new Metal Gear game in the works, called Metal Gear: Survive. This one will split off from the main timeline and create its own universe and puts four players together, encouraging them to work as a team to stay alive.
The story names you and your pals as soldiers previously employed at Metal Gear Solid 5's Mother Base, facing off against a number of external threats from all sorts of traditional and more fantastical enemies.
It "takes a divergent look at familiar Metal Gear themes and pursues a fresh spirit of exploration in unique gameplay mechanics", as per the PR. New weapons can be used "to combat charging creatures and lethal environments".
That doesn't sound like your average Metal Gear game and that is only doubled down by the new trailer release at this year's Gamescom.
If we're being cynical though, we'd argue that the game looks a little like some kind of Metal Gear wave-defence mode. Combining aspects of Call of Duty Zombies, with Fortnite and Killing Floor. It's not hugely imaginative, but the weapons sure do look cool.
What do you think of the new game?
