As much as unlocking content in games is half the fun of progression, not everyone enjoys grinding for hours to get all the different play-style options. Some people just want all of them right away, and developers have figured out that they are willing to pay for that privilege.
That's where Microntransactions rear their head in Overwatch, Blizzard's latest big MOBA/FPS hybrid release. Instead of buying skins or definite upgrades you don't have though, it's taken the system that has been so successful in the likes of Hearthstone and has introduced randomised loot boxes for gamers to buy.
Priced at $2 for two, $5 for five, $10 for 11, $20 for 24 and $40 for 50, players can buy up any amount they like. $40 is quite a lot to spend when that essentially works out to the full price of the game, but for those who want all of the included cosmetic items straight away, you can grab them with a little investment.
For those that don't want to pay to unlock it all from the start though, as you level your characters up you will unlock loot boxes yourself, so you won't miss out if you aren't paying up. Indeed there are no customisation items within the boxes, just cosmetic upgrades that can make your character stand out from the crowd and show that you aren't a nooby.
Or at least, you aren't a nooby with empty pockets.
Do you think having paid for cosmetic unlocks makes them even less attractive?
