While making a video tour about Microsoft's Applied Sciences lab, The Verge team discovered that Microsoft has a working and almost complete holodeck.
The technology was revealed by Stevie Bathiche who explained that it was developed as a part of the lab's effort to create truly realistic 3D virtual environments without using glasses. The system works by using Kinect to track the user's location then it projects LED light to his eyes directly.
You can see the result in the video here, but keep in mind that the effect can never be conveyed properly on a traditional 2D display.
Bathiche hinted that the lab has other cooler tech ideas for realistic glasses-less 3D environments, but they are not ready to be seen by the public.
