Although the minimum specifications for playing virtual reality games have come down a lot since the original unveiling of both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, that's not to say that all games fall under that umbrella. Indeed the new DOOM VFR, which puts players in the boots of a scientist stomping all manner of demonic entities, is now available, but its minimum requirements are much higher than your average VR game.
DOOM VFR isn't a port of the recent DOOM 2016 release, but is more of a reimagining using the same assets. It's designed to take advantage of all of the fast-paced, run and gun gameplay of the recent Doom, but without getting too nauseous with all the jumping and sprinting.
Unless your system is high-end though, you may feel a little nausea at the specifications though, as they're far from easy.
Here's what you need to play the game at minimum settings:
OS: Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions)
Processor: CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 or better
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 / AMD Radeon RX 480 or better
Storage: 17 GB available space
A GTX 1070 or RX 480 is nothing to sniff at, though the processors and 8GB RAM requirements aren't so taxing. The reason these specs are pretty high though, is because as pretty as DOOM VFR is, you also need to hit 90 FPS on average to keep it a comfortable experience.
But what if you want to be able to crank up those settings a little more? For that, you need to have spent hundreds of dollars on a GPU.
OS: Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions)
Processor: CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 / AMD RX Vega 64
Storage: 17 GB available space
