Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a title that a select few people have been waiting many years for. The original was a wonderful mashup of (still) beautiful, stark-white visuals, free running and unique environments to make your way through. It was however pretty linear and its story was far from its strongest point.
Which is why it seems EA is putting more effort into the new game's setting and the motivations of its characters. In an early-on mission previewed during EA's conference at GAMESCOM, we saw how Faith begins her journey as a runner and her motivation for continuing to provide the service to different customers around the mega-city.
The story telling has also taken a leaf out of the book of classic first person titles and instead tells it in-engine, which is a distinct step away from the between-level comic that was used in the original to detail what was going on. This, according to PCG, allows for a much more seamless transition between story telling and gameplay.
Similarly so, Faith is much more fluid than she was before. Although the controls may facilitate the odd awkward bump into a wall, for the most part Faith is a smooth operator this time around. She's able to cross much larger distances and slip into buildings just as easily as she can run across them. Combat is also said to be vastly improved over the original game.
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is set for release on February 25 2016.
