Remember beautifully rendered battles and blocky overworld characters? Remember paintbrush hands and text-only conversations? Remember cross-dressing? Yes, Final Fantasy VII was a masterpiece that's fondly remembered by all and that includes its unique aesthetic from the time. While fans eagerly await its remastered/remake, one modder has turned Final Fantasy XV's look to be very much like the classic title, with blocky characters that look a little out of place with their backdrop.
The 1997 Retro Noctis Outfit from modder Kyriya does only affect Noctis, so all of the other characters might be a little confused why their friend looks so... polygonal. Still, he may not be on his own for long, as the developer of the mod has said that they're working on a Prompto costume in the same theme and who knows how far they'll go beyond that.
"Remember the days past? Where graphics use to look like this, good times! Well now you can bring back those times with this retro style Noctis mod! Faithful 32x32 textures and blocky arms included," the mod's description reads.
It was made for fun, of course, but there was some real inspiration behind it. Noctis voice actor, Ray Chase, recently stated during a Twitch stream that it would be fun to see a Final Fantasy VII inspired costume for the character (thanks Kotaku). And well, here we are.
The stats for the outfit are:
175 Strength
175 Magic
75 Vitality
