Sharpen your great swords, prime your bow guns, and make sure to equip the right talisman and jewels, as Monster Hunter is coming to the big screen at some point in the next couple of years. Thanks to a new, inflated budget too, it should look pretty good when it does. Not AAA, Hollywood good, but good enough. With $60 million to spend, the production team should be able to get at least a couple of good looking monsters on screen.
With the monstrous success of Monster Hunter World in the west, it's no surprise that a movie is set to be made about it, because the audience for the series is larger today than it's ever been. It's been in pre-production for some time already, but now that it has a decent budget attached, production can really start to enter full swing.
that Milla Jovavich is set to take the leading role in the film, which isn't wholly surprising, considering she's headed up fellow Capcom film series, Resident Evil for the past decade and a half. Constantin films, the development studio behind that same film series will also put together the Monster Hunter movie and the director will be Paul Anderson, who previously worked on Resident Evil movies as well.
Although many of the above should raise serious red flags about the quality of the eventual production, what's less worrisome is that the special effects will be handled by Mr X. While that studio did work on Resident Evil: Retribution -- hardly a visual masterpiece -- it also did the work for the Shape of Water and Robocop, which were two visually striking movies with great effects.
Regardless, Capcom is interested in creating a new film series from Monster Hunter, so expect it to be poorly critically received, but still turn a profit and therefore be cranked out every couple of years while the games remain relevant.
