Mortal Kombat animated film launches in April

The next entry in the Mortal Kombat series of films will be an entirely animated one and will focus on the exploits and battles of Scorpion during the battles of Outworld vs Earthrealm — the original story from the first game(s). It's release date is now set as April 12 for its digital debut on major streaming platforms, but it will also get a Blu-Ray and DVD release on April 28.

Mortal Kombat released in arcades in 1992 as a revitalized idea of what fighting games could be. It introduces complicated moves that needed real timing and in-depth understanding of the game to pull off, as well as tonnes of practice. But it was the violence it was most known for, including the oft-chased fatalities at the end of a bout. That spawned two movies, both of which were wonderfully awful in their own ways. The first is definitely still worth a watch if you enjoy your techno.

Game sequels followed suit over the years, and despite the success of a short-lived web show with a gritty tone that matched the games, movie sequels have been decidedly absent from Mortal Kombat's cannon. Now though, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpions Revenge will look to change that, with what may be the first of many deep-dives into the series' most popular and enduring characters.

All your favorites will make their appearance, and the story might be a familiar one, but the perspective will be decidedly more fiery and skull-filled.

Look out for Scorpion's Revenge on April 12.
