Nintendo's recently announced NES Classic is quite a sweet deal for hardcore gamers who'd enjoy the nostalgia and casual gamers who'd like to enjoy some of the classic games that defined gaming in its early years. There are a few caveats you need to be aware of before buying one though.
Responding to Polygon, Nintendo clarified that the Mini NES doesn't support original NES cartridges. The mini console also doesn't support USB storage and it isn't able to connect to the internet by any means. Simply put, the relaunched NES is able to play only its 30 pre-loaded games.
The Mini NES is bundled with a replica of the classic NES controller and you can buy another one for $9.99. The console also supports Wii's Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro. However, in order to connect two controllers simultaneously, one of them must be the NES Classic Controller.
Finally, Nintendo confirmed that the NES Classic can fit in the palm of your hand and that it supports HDMI video output only.
Perhaps NES Classic offers nothing new to gamers beyond the ability to once more feel the classic NES controller in your hands. Nonetheless, we find its nostalgic and geeky allure too hard to resist. We're quite sure it would make a lovely birthday gift for a lot of kids too. What do you think?
