There's still life in the old dog yet. It's been nearly 30 years since the Sega Genesis was first launched in Japan, but there are still developers out there making new content for it. A new game set for release this year, called Paprium, looks to bring back the classic, Genesis side-scrolling beat'em up, but with a few modern twists to add to the experience.
Paprium was developed by WaterMelon games, the developer who previously created Piers Solar and the Great Architects, released back in 2010.
Paprium will be a bigger game in many ways, though it will have more traditional stages than the open world RPG of Watermelon's previous efforts. Paprium will feature a huge 80 megabytes of Genesis cartridge, cramming 24 levels, five characters and a multitude of save slots onto a single PCB.
Oh and the game features two player coop play too, as most beat'em ups of the era did.
The game sees you playing as a group of enforcers, fighting their way through the post-apocalyptic city of Paprium, facing off against drugged up street thugs and organised criminals. You'll use your fists, feet and a variety of abilities along the way, as well as items from the environment to beat the crap out of the bad guys once and for all.
Featuring a pumping synth soundtrack, the game will be available in limited and normal editions, with prices starting at $70. The earliest buyers also received a free manga comic of the game's world, but those are now sold out.
All versions of the game will work on both Genesis and Megadrive (NTSC and PAL) consoles.
