The Night Trap remaster is one of more surprising success stories in recent years, but with its blend of classic FMV-driven gameplay, nostalgic design choices, terrible B-movie acting and trashy monster effects, it's fair to say it has a warm place in the hearts of many older gamers. None of those gamers have ever played it on a Nintendo system though, because Nintendo America's senior VP, Howard Lincoln, famously said at the time of its release that the game would never appear on a Nintendo console. That's all about to change.
Night Trap was originally released in 1992 to much disdain from mainstream press and concerned parents. They saw a game about murdering young women and giving players some measure of control over that saw it as monstrous, leading to the game being banned in many countries. In reality Night Trap was nothing so violent as expected and certainly not a patch on the kinds of games we've seen in the decades since.
Now NIght Trap is coming full circle though, as it's stepping foot onto Nintendo systems for the first time later this year. As Kotaku highlights, we don't have a firm date for when that will be, but we know Summer 2018 is the rough estimate. Alongside the EShop listing, Limited Run Games is also launching a (unsurprisingly limited) run of physical copies of the game.
Whichever version you opt for though, you'll get the high-definition 25th anniversary version of the game with all of its UI enhancements, deleted scenes, director commentary and a few tweaks to fix gameplay issues.
