Nintendo licensed Puzzle & Dragons for a 3DS Mario version

Free to play mobile title, Puzzle & Dragons is one of the more popular games on the platform right now. It's not hugely surprising then, that it looks set to make an appearance on Nintendo's also popular handheld console, the 3DS. What is though, is that it's doing so via an official Nintendo license, with a Mario theme.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Edition is going to be available in Japan on April 29, though if and when it will see a more international release, we're not sure of just yet.

It will play very similarly to the original, replacing the standard characters with Mario themed ones. That means you'll see lots of Goombas, Fire Flowers, Mushrooms and other Nintendo properties bundled together under one, match-three roof. There will also be an overhead map, themed just liked the current version of New Super Mario Bros.

It's not clear at the moment if the Mario version of this game will operate under the same free-to-play, micro-transaction funded platform as the mobile game, or whether Nintendo will instead charge for it up front and then make a few in-game purchases free, or based around an earnable currency.

Hopefully the latter, the last thing we need is Nintendo getting a taste for micro-transactions. It's scary enough that Mario Kart 8 has DLC.
