As of today, the European Nintendo Wii U eShop allows 18+ rated content but only after 11pm daily.
Users who try to view trailers of games such as Zombiu now receive a message stating that "You cannot view this content. The times during which this content can be viewed have been restricted."
18+ rated content cannot be purchased or downloaded during the day even if it was bought during the night. These restrictions apply even if the user turns parental control off.
A Nintendo Italy representative confirmed the restrictions and explained that they have decided to restrict access to 18+ content to between 11 pm and 3 am as "an additional precaution to make sure that minors cannot access content which is inappropriate for their age."
"Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries," he added.
Several European countries such as Germany already have laws that prohibit the sale of 18+ content in brick-and-mortar stores before nightfall.
