Despite the fact that the Nintendo NES Classic has been one of the company's most popular products released in recent years, it's announced that the next delivery batch will be the last. It has officially halted production, leaving fans in consternation as prices begin to skyrocket for the little retro console.
Nintendo's NES Mini Classic is a micro version of its original NES console. It looks the same as its predecessor, but has a much smaller footprint and is essentially a little emulator machine. It comes with 30 pre-installed games - that can be modded to a much larger library if you want - and they are all compatible with save states so you don't always have to rely on passwords or completing them in a single session.
But now unless you have one or manage to buy one in the next couple of weeks, getting hold of one could turn out to be very expensive, as Nintendo has officially ended production:
"Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year," Nintendo said in a statement to IGN. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologise. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."
While many have questioned why Nintendo might do this, especially when the NES Mini is such a financial success, some have pointed out that there is a real cultural difference with Nintendo vs a lot of western game companies. It isn't trying to make a killing and never intended for the NES Mini to be a long term product. It was a surprising success and we may see other mini consoles in the future, but for now, the NES Mini is no more.
