Nintendo's Miyamoto: Sony And Microsoft Are Boring

Nintendo has been criticized for the lack of third party support for its consoles since the original Wii was released. Nearly all blockbusters are released on Microsoft and Sony's consoles long before they are ported half-heartedly to Nintendo's, if at all.

Nintendo General Manager and lead game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, is well aware of that but he doesn't believe it to be a bad thing.

"What the other companies are doing makes business sense," he argued. But it’s boring. The same games appear on every system. At Nintendo we want an environment where game creators can collaborate and think of ideas for games that could have never happened before."

The creator of legends such as Donkey Kong, Super Mario and Zelda, Miyamoto believes that game designers should stop mimicking movies and focus on giving players the tools to shape their own experience and craft their own stories.

"These younger game creators, they want to be recognised," said the 61 years old game creator. "They want to tell stories that will touch people’s hearts. And while I understand that desire, the trend worries me. It should be the experience, that is touching. What I strive for is to make the person playing the game the director. All I do is help them feel that, by playing, they’re creating something that only they could create."

"When you play a game, one moment you're just controlling it and then suddenly you feel you're in its world," he noted. "And that's something you cannot experience through film or literature. It's a completely unique experience."

Miyamoto refused to discuss Nintendo's plans for Virtual Reality games or devices.
