For PC gamers, the idea of paying even more to use an internet service often seems ridiculous, but many of their console counterparts do so on the Xbox and now Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has reported that it has reached nearly 10 million users for its Switch Online service — and that doesn't include those running the free trial. It does include discounted family memberships though, which can have up to eight people per account, so it seems likely that Nintendo now has well north of 10 million users on its Switch online service.
At $20 a year, the Nintendo Switch Online service is cheaper than both Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus, but unlike those services it doesn't offer free games on a monthly basis. It's still required for online multiplayer and offers benefits like cloud saves, and voice chat through the accompanying smartphone app. Regardless of its lack of free games though, Nintendo seems to be doing a good job of attracting interest from potential players.
At two years into its lifecycle, the Nintendo Switch is cementing itself well as the second console that living room gamers own. Nintendo has sold some 35 million consoles at this time. That may be short of the near 100 million sales of the PS4 and the 40-something million that the Xbox One is thought to have sold, but it's not far behind the latter and the Switch has only been available for two years. The other two have been around for six.
What home consoles do you guys have? I must admit I don't have any of the latest generation, although I have one of everything from the generation or two before that.
