No Man's Sky is adding a VR mode this summer

If it's been a long time since you explore the expansive galaxy of No Man's Sky, this summer might be a great time to revisit it — if you have a VR headset like an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. The upcoming Beyond expansion from Hello Games, is set to introduce a new, virtual dimension to the game's universe, letting anyone with a VR headset experience it in a far more personal and immersive fashion.

No Man's Sky was one of the most egregious examples of overhyping a game ever. At its core, it's an indie experience dressed up with a AA paint job. There is nothing wrong with that and if it had released as such would likely have had a decent launch with a firm fan base of dedicated players. But that wasn't to be. Instead it received a major marketing push by Sony, giving it the kind of widespread coverage of a AAA release. Features were overpromised, overhyped, and oversold, leading to gamers feeling disappointing in the eventual game.

Over the past few years though, No Man's Sky has evolved and updated to the point of a much more fleshed out experience with less of a grind, more freedom, and a much busier galaxy to explore. Adding virtual reality is just the latest upgrade for the core experience, offering a new way to play for new and experiences players alike.

By bringing full VR support, for free, to the millions of players already playing the game, No Man’s Sky will become perhaps the most-owned VR title when released, which is weird to think about," Hello Games told PCGamer. "The team is working so hard to live up to the expectations that creates. We are excited for that moment when millions of players will suddenly update and be able to set foot on their home planets and explore the intricate bases they have built in virtual reality for the first time."

Free for existing players, the No Man's Sky VR mode will work with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PSVR headsets. We expect to see support for the Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S too.
