As is typical from more mid-range GPUs, the upcoming RTX 3060 Ti is going to offer better bang for buck than the more powerful, but much more expensive alternatives. The RTX 3090 is the most powerful card of all, but despite costing more than twice that of the 3080, it only offers around 10 percent more performance. The RTX 3080 is only around 30 percent faster than the 3070, despite costing $200 more. More of a surprise though, is the RTX 3060 Ti, which may only be 10% slower than the 3070, despite costing just $400 ($100 less).
That makes it faster than an RTX 2080 Super, for just $400. A couple of months ago, you'd have had to spend well over $700 to get that kind of performance.
This isn't confirmed by third-party or approved first-party benchmarks just yet, but we do have some leaked 3DMark test results which suggest the 3060 Ti could be the must-have GPU of its generation. As Videocardz's comparison shows, the 3060 Ti managed 30,706 points in 3DMark Fire Strike, and 12,175 points in Time Spy. That made it 11 percent and 13 percent slower than the 3070 respectively, but six percent and four percent faster than the 2080 Super.
That's an awesome achievement and a big uplift for the $400 price point over what we saw with the RTX 2000 series, where those cards were barely one notch about their predecessor's performance.
The RTX 3000 series might be hard to get hold of, but its performance at least, appears to deliver. It'll need to though, because while RDNA2 cards from AMD are similarly in short supply, their performance is equally impressive. RTX cards hold an advantage with Ray Tracing and DLSS, but that may not last forever as AMD improves its software support for the new gen competition.
