Oculus: No Rift VR For Mac Until Apple Releases "A Good Computer"

Apple's Macs and MacBooks have always been known as the go-to option for consumers who prefer to pay a premium for a hassle-free premium quality. Nonetheless, it is no secret that Apple didn't add any top-of-the-line GPU's to its computers for several years now. This hasn't been an issue so far, but it looks like Apple's luck has run out with the advent of virtual reality.

We've all seen the "gaming on a Mac" memes and witnessed our fair share of horror stories of naïve gamers who paid a premium for a Mac just to discover that it isn't capable of running modern AAA titles. Unfortunately, the situation is only going to get worse as Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey openly confirmed that Oculus Rift would never support Mac until Apple releases "a good computer."

When asked by ShackNews about the future of Oculus Rift with Apple computers, Plamer replied that "That is up to Apple. If they ever release a good computer, we will do it."

"It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn’t prioritize high-end GPUs. You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn’t match our recommended specs," he clarified. "So if they prioritize higher-end GPUs like they used to for a while back in the day, we’d love to support Mac. But right now, there’s just not a single machine out there that supports it."

The most powerful MacBook comes with a measly Intel HD Graphics 5300 GPU while the most powerful Mac for home users can be configured to house an AMD Radeon R9 M395 which around 30% to 40% slower than the Rift's recommended Radeon R9 290X.
