Oculus Is Working On Standalone Rift Virtual Reality Headset

During its Connect 3 conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Oculus is working on a standalone version of its famous Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

The Oculus Rift is supposedly able to run the most sophisticated virtual experiences available today, but this power comes at a cost: the headset can only be used in conjunction with a top-of-the-line PC. Needless to say, this adds substantially to the headset's cost and limits its mobility.

The new headset, identified simply as "the next step," will be slightly less powerful than the Oculus Rift but it will be entirely standalone. The headset also one-ups current mobile VR headsets such Google's recently revealed Daydream View by supporting position tracking.

The headset is an early prototype and is still a long way from production.
