In a few hours Kickstarter members have pledged $3.5 million to support the development and production of Ouya.
Ouya is the brainchild of Julie Uhrman who envisions it as an Android based console that is open to developers and players alike. "Let’s open this sucker up," the console’s Kickstarter pitch reads. "It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen. Let’s make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy."
The console will come with a complete development kit that is based on the developers’ familiar Android SDK so developers are free to create the games they like without paying any license fees. The only restriction is that some or all aspects of the game must be playable for free.
Ouya will retail for $99 and will include the following:
- Tegra3 quad-core processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB of internal flash storage
- HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
- WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth LE 4.0
- USB 2.0 (one)
- Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
- Android 4.0
Ouya’s KickStarter campaign aimed to collect $950,000 in 30 days. At the time of writing it has already surpassed $3.5 million and there are still 28 days to go.
