Even though games have been featuring crime for a long time, with GTA perhaps as the most iconic of the murder/robbery sim genre, it's become far more popular in the past couple of years thanks to the likes of Payday and it's sequel. But there is more competition on the horizon, with Battlefield Hardline and GTA V's new Heist system providing a comparable experience.
So what does Overkill, the developer of Payday think about that? Not much, apparently.
"We’re not in a position any more where we have to be scared," said Overkill's producer Almir Listo. "We have our community and we know what they want and this just makes the heists genre more popular."
"I’m looking forward to GTA Heists on PC and seeing what Hardline has got," he continued (via VG247) "From our perspective we just welcome the challenge. Any competition can only make our game better. We will of course play their games and have a lot of fun and we’ll learn from them, what they did good and what they could have done better."
If anything, Listo is pretty confident that while these other games may offer a comparable experience to Payday, it likes to think that it developed the formula and the others are pretenders to the throne.
"If anyone knows how difficult it is to make a great heist game it’s us so we wish them the best of luck," he said.
Payday 2 will be re-released in June this year as the Crimewave Edition, featuring new content and updated visuals for current gen consoles. Overkill also plans to continue supporting it with DLC for at least two more years.
