PC Kinect Is Superior To Xbox 360 Kinect

The PC version of Kinect will be superior to its Xbox 360 counterpart and will be able to track movements at closer range than that possible on the Xbox 360.

"We've been asked whether there will also be new Kinect hardware especially for Windows. The answer is yes," Craig Eisler, Microsoft's general manager for Kinect for Windows, wrote on Microsoft's MSDN blog. "Building on the existing Kinect for Xbox 360 device, we have optimised certain hardware components and made firmware adjustments which better enable PC-centric scenarios."

"New firmware which enables the depth camera to see objects as close as 50 centimetres in front of the device without losing accuracy or precision, with graceful degradation down to 40 centimetres."

The PC version of Kinect will be available early in 2012.
