Phasmophobia gets massive 2025 overhaul with new ghost-hunting device

Kinetic Games has announced plans for a massive overhaul of its multiplayer paranormal horror game, Phasmophobia. The title will see updates landing throughout 2025, with changes to the gameplay structure, locations, and tools.

News in brief

  • Phasmophobia gets a 2025 overhaul with some major changes coming throughout the year.
  • Gameplay will now focus on “unique” captures, meaning the first team member to find something earns greater rewards.
  • A tape recorder has also been added to devices, allowing players to capture paranormal sounds.

Kinetic Games’ shared its development preview for the 2020 ghost-hunting title on its blog, outlining plans for the coming year.

The most major change is the way the game grades findings. Instead of grading by quality, players are now encouraged to capture “unique” media types. The first team player to capture a specific media type wis rewarded with extra XP and money at the end of the contract.

Repeated captures of the same media type will be marked as “duplicates” which means the more unique captures added to the Journal, the greater the rewards. Kinetic says it’s adding loads of new things for players to capture, too.

Speaking of new things, a tape recorder is joining the game’s already extensive array of capture devices. Seasoned paranormal investigators appreciate the importance of recording audio phenomena, and now players can use the sound recorder to capture ghostly knocks, wails, and voices. The recorder comes with visual indicators to direct players to the source of the sound, at which point the device starts recording automatically. Sounds can also be played back later in the Journal.

Finally, Phasmophobia’s locations haven’t been left out of this latest update. Grafton Farmhouse has been visited by Krampus over the holidays, with plenty for intrepid ghost hunters to uncover, while Bleasdale Farmhouse will undergo a complete rework with fresh decor, a redesigned layout, and new areas to explore, like the tea room and trophy room. Kinetic has promised to share more specifics on the location’s new layout soon.
