Phillips has launched the first "Designed for Xbox Gaming monitor," measuring a monstrous 55-inches and offering 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, a 4ms response time, and an impressive 1,200 nits of brightness. This is either a small TV, or an enormous monitor, but Phillips is branding it as the latter, and claims it's designed specifically to be used for Xbox gaming.
There really isn't a lot of difference between monitors and TVs today, with both supporting HDR, 4K resolution, high refresh rates, and excellent contrast ratios. The main differentiation factor is size, and the choice of connectors, like HDMI 2.1 — which aren't as important on PC monitors thanks to DisplayPort prevalence. The Phillips Momentum 559M1RYV blurs the lines by offering a 55-inch display, a size normally reserved for TVs, but with all of the features we'd expect from a high-end gaming monitor.
It has full support for the VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification and enjoys a rated 95% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage.
A big part of its console focus is the inclusion of a specialized Bowers and Wilkins speaker system — effectively a built-in soundbar. It also has an Xbox game mode, which is designed to minimize input lag, and maximise visuals, without the usual upscaling artifacts that can be present on some 4K TVs.
The monitor will go on sale in the coming weeks, with a starting price of $1,600.
