While many once upon a time pirates often grow out of the practice thanks to the simpler methods of game purchase and digital distribution and their own growing financial independence, that doesn't mean there isn't a new generation waiting in the wings or a few cheap-asses hanging around still. Those same pirates who downloaded copies of the Talos Principle have been struck by a new developer booby trap, one that has them trapped in a lift forever.
Much like Croteam's previous anti piracy measure, Serious Sam 3's murderous scorpion that would chase players around the map and make their completion of the game nigh on impossible, the same developers applied the same thinking to The Talos Principle. They added an anti-piracy measure that stops you from progressing if you step into a lift about mid-way through the game.
That lift will take you up a little way, before stopping forever and giving you little else but a view of the world that you were once free to wander through.
While initially thought to be a game breaking bug, when several people posted on forums asking for help getting around it, NeoGAF quickly pointed out the problem: the game had been pirated.
There's even a reference to the notorious release group, SKIDROW, in a QR code near the lift.
However, Croteam didn't just want to hang pirates out to dry. It actually has a method for importing the game's saves, leading some pirates to buy the game in order to continue progressing.
What do you guys think of anti-piracy measures like this?
