While any time you let the public loose on tools that are designed with developers in mind, the results are often not exactly stellar, there are always a few that shine through and make something of it that was totally unexpected. Take the case of Mario Maker on the Wii U. While it has led to the creation of numerous terrible Super Mario levels, there are some that have taken level creation to a whole new level.
The level in question is called Junior Airship Showdown and it is a really well made level, designed within the tenets of traditional Mario levels and therefore feels like one that could conceivably be found within a Super Mario Brothers game.
However as great as the level is, its checkpoint system is even more impressive. When you reach certain milestones within the level, you can see a trio of shells and shapes, remembering those and inputting them into the complicated looking system at the start lets you restart at that checkpoint.
It's obviously a little convoluted compared to being able to just warp a character there if they fail along the way, but it shows the ingenuity of those working with the Mario Maker software. That same level also has a tiered boss battle system which is impressive in its own right.
