PlayerUnknown, otherwise known as Brendan Greene, is set to leave the development of the game that bears his name and is still one of the most popular in the world: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. PUBG, as it is more commonly known, was the game that truly cemented the Battle Royale genre as its own, super-popular entity. While it has been heavily overtaken by Fortnite in the last year, it still draws in more than a million players at a time on a regular basis.
Despite its continued popularity though, Greene is now leaving the ongoing main development of the game and will instead be taking on work at PUBG Special Projects, a division at the company's Amsterdam location that focuses more on experimental projects and ideas.
"We are tasked with exploring, experimenting, and creating new technologies, tools, pipelines, and gameplay," Greene wrote in the announcement, via PCGamesN. "But for me, it is more than that. Together with a team of game developers and researchers, we will explore new possibilities of interaction and connection within the game space."
It seems likely from Greene's ongoing wording that a big component of what he's working on is to do with online interactivity and connectivity. To what extent that might impact the main PUBG game is anyone's guess, but it may be that he's working on entirely new game projects altogether .
The fact that he talks about player locomotion has us wondering if he's thinking about VR. What do you think of Greene's move and news?
