A pair of Pokemon fans were arrested at this year's Pokemon World Championships in Boston this weekend, after they were found to have several illegal guns and lots of ammunition in the trunk of their car. The pair were busted after online forum users noted their boasts about the arsenal and called in the threat in to the police.
Local security forces then detained the pair when they attempted to enter the championships, and awaited the arrival of police. The car in question was later found to contain a 12 gauge shotgun, an AR-15, a hunting knife and other armaments. There were also several hundred rounds of ammunition.
The pair, both from Idaho, met online in a Facebook group related to the pocket monsters, and later posted pictures of their car and the weapons they had before heading off to the event. It's not clear if their plan was to use the weapons, but neither were found wielding them at any point.
"Prior to the event this weekend, our community of players made us aware of a security issue," a Pokémon Company spokesperson said (via Eurogamer).
"We gathered information and gave it as soon as possible to the authorities at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center who acted swiftly and spearheaded communication with the Boston Police Department."
