Niantic announced that Pokémon Go will receive its first major update "later this week."
The update will add 80 new Pokémon from the Johto region (AKA: Generation 2) in addition to the existing 151 Pokémon from the original series. A handful of Johto Pokémon were added to the game in December, but they could be obtained only by hatching eggs. The new Pokémon collection however can be found freely in the wild.
The new update also introduces new avatar cloths, new encounter gameplay, new evolution items and new types of berries.
Pokémon Go was launched in July 2016. It quickly became a global phenomenon as it climbed the app store ranks in record time. By September 216, Pokémon Go was already downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide. Interest in the game has been declining steadily since then - as one would expect for a game that relies on players' physical activity. Nonetheless, Pokémon Go is still one of the most profitable games ever.
