It was consumer demand that led Sony to develop and release the Linux enabled version of the PS2 in Japan in June. It is consumer demand again which has resulted in the announcement that the Linux ps2 will be available all over the world soon.
Sony Computer Entertainment, Chief Technical Officer (no he is not a native American), Shin'ichi Okamoto, said at a presentation at the Rambus Developer Forum in San Jose, California, that the finalized version is being readied for world wide release.
No release date has been set yet, but one will be announced soon.
With the Linux kit PS2 gains many features similar to those of any desktop pc.
Demonstrations of the kits capabilities included a ps2 running an mp3 player and a word processor.
