It hasn't taken long; in fact a short few months after its release, the UMD system has been cracked. A release group has already managed to create ISO files of several PSP games. This, in fact, means that the files can now be burnt on a CD or DVD and scrutinized on a PC.
The news delivers a blow to Sony's UMD system which was seen as the cornerstone of its antipiracy efforts. The PSP was touted by Sony as an impenetrable fortress offering no out signal and sporting a proprietary disc format.
The group has announced that it has created ISO files of three PSP games, Vampire Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racers. In practical terms the achievement does not mean much and the release group itself makes it clear by claiming Of course you can't play this game yet, and you won't be playing it anytime soon on a burnt umd disc (as sony has already said they wont be releasing burners for these).
The fact that some experienced amateurs have managed to crack Sony's impenetrable and propriatery format however, suggests that there may be more to follow and with big movie studios announcing a variety of movie distribution deals on UMD, alarm bells must be sounding in Sony's labs.
