The PlayStation VR bundle from Sony is now out in the wild, bringing virtual reality to the PS4 for the first time and it's great. Reviews are strong and our own personal time with it can confirm that it's a very comparable VR solution to the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. It turns out though that the PSVR system actually works in a limited 2D mode on the Xbox One, Wii U and the PC as well.
The reason it works with all these unlikely systems, is because it has a functionality that allows it to accept video inputs from a standard HDMI connection. If there is no VR engagement, it simply projects it to a large virtual TV, but that could make the PSVR a great headset for portable, large screen, 2D gaming.
This is a functionality that is not present on either of the big PC VR headsets and makes the PSVR headset incredibly versatile. It seems likely too that with some driver tweaks and development, we could eventually see the PSVR working on the PC too.
There is no support for the camera, which means that there is no positional tracking with the new system - just tilt controls - but that's not exactly important when it comes to a 2D display. There is no support for the motion controllers either, but again, that's something that can be worked on in the future.
I know this site is mostly populated by PC gamers, but are any of you considering the PSVR?
