When the first game you ever make turns out to be the most popular PC game in the world, why not take a few years to refine that idea before moving on to something else? That's exactly what Riot Games did with League of Legends, helping to reshape the entire MOBA and online eSports landscape before trying its hand at a new game. Now though it's gotten the time and the interest to create something new that's not got anything to do with that hit title. What it is though, is anyone's guess.
Riot founders Brandon "Ryze" Beck and Marc "Tryndamere" Merrill made the announcement themselves, saying that their roles at the company will officially change with the commencement of the new game's development, helping them step back into the practice that made them the huge successes they ultimately became.
"In our new roles we’re going back to focusing on what is ultimately the most important thing we do: making great games," they said. "Dylan Jadeja (CFO), Scott Gelb (CTO), and Nicolo Laurent (President) will tank company operations; all three are longtime Rioters who have been integral to shaping our company’s vision, strategy, and culture over the last decade. We are thrilled to be able to have a great team of such capable leaders and look forward to working with them to finally put the ‘s’ in Riot Games."
It's not clear at this time if development is just starting at the pair are going to be involved from the ground floor, or if they're merely joining an already existing team with a long-in-development project that they just want to help get across the finish line. It seems likely to be a blend of the two, but your guess is as good as ours in this regard.
