While it might not have the dizzying heights of DotA 2's 2014 $10 million prize pool to promote its game, Riot does go all out when it comes to League of Legends, like promoting its Ocean Week (January 23 through 31) on the Australian and New Zealand gaming servers by offering to sink a LoL Champion shaped statue to create a new artificial reef.
Of course Riot needs everyone to play a lot of games if that's going to happen. Think of it as the final stretch goal, with many steps below it.
Every time someone wins a game with an Ocean Week champion on League of Legends' ANZ server, one point will go towards the total. Which champions that happens to be, will change week to week, but of course will include the likes of Fizz, Gangplank and Nautilus.
If everyone can help contribute 30,000 points to the cause, another eight champions will be opened up for play; when 90,000 is reached, every one that contributed gets a four-win IP boost; at 130,000 points, a bunch of legacy skins will be added back into the store for a limited time; with 175,000 points, everyone gets a double chance of unlocking a legendary skin when they buy a mystery gift for themselves or a friend; and of course, finally, if 275,000 points are reached, Riot will sink a statue shaped like a champion into the sea to create a new artificial reef.
If you managed to contribute at least three points to the cause during Ocean Week, then you will have your name engraved upon said statue.
Sound like fun? Or just a way for Riot to make a little more money during a slow January? What do you guys think?
