If you thought Hatsune Miku was a bizarre phenomenon, wait until you get a load of the latest smash-hit, international pop sensation known as K/DA. It's a digital group of digital characters made up of League of Legends personas, backed by real-life popstars who will ghost write and ghost sing for them. And their first song has already been such a huge hit, that League of Legends developer, Riot, has announced that it's going to branch out into its own music label in the near future.
K/DA is made up of four female characters from the MOBA title: Ahri, Evelynn, Kai'Sa, and Akali, with real-life singers Madison Beer, and Jaira Burns, as well as all-girl-group (G)I-DLE providing their vocals. Burns and the girl group have their roots in the K-pop scene, while Beer is an up and coming singer in the U.S., as per PCGamesN. Together they provide the vocal talent behind the digital group, while Riot handles the animation for their music video, which has racked up tens of millions of views on YouTube alone in the past couple of weeks.
Technically K/DA exists in an alternative League of Legends universe where the characters aren't summoned to fight each other on the Rift, although those skins are now available for players on it, so there's some bizarre crossover here. Think of it like when you see your Attack on Titan characters showing up in high school for spin-off "comedy."
As weird as it may seem, K/DA seems set to become a success and Riot is looking to cash in. Expect more from this group and other LoL characters in the future.
