Epic Games has only been the parent company of Psyonix and its hit esports title, Rocket League, for a few months, but it's already planning big changes. Not to gameplay, but to monetization. With the ever-growing hostile feelings towards randomized reward sin games, and the creeping of international legislation against them, Epic Games is getting out in front of any problems and is ditching loot crates in Rocket League for good.
Epic previously changed its stance on loot boxes with Fortnite, where it switched V-Bux Llamas to X-Ray Llamas, that let players see what it is they'd be buying with the collection of items and skins. If players don't like what they see, they can wait for tomorrow and see if that Llama is more to their liking. When the change in Rocket League takes place later this year, it will convert the current system into something similar. Players will always know what they're buying, removing the randomization from the equation.
Rocket League didn't always have loot crates. They were introduced in 2016 when they were all the rage and there was far less of a negative connotation to them. It was pitched as a way to help fund Psyonix' growing esports league, as Kotaku points out, but with Epic Games at the helm, money is no longer a problem for Psyonix. While Epic will no doubt want to turn a profit with its purchase, it's going to do so in a more transparent fashion.
That will go down well with most players, who are either indifferent about randomized rewards or actively despise them. Now people will get the same rewards they would have gotten, they'll just know what that is before hand, which is a much more fair system and one that's less exploitative of addictive natures.
