Rocket League has been one of the biggest successes of the indie gaming space of the past few years. What was once an obscure idea about playing football with cars strapped with rocket boosters, has become one of the most popular games on Steam in recent years, enjoying 10s of thousands of players at a time, hundreds of thousands every month, a popular Esports scene, and gamers of all ages across all platforms playing it. And now they can all play together, no matter what platform they're on.
This might seem like a confusing idea at first. If you're a PC player, you've no doubt played with PS4 gamers, Switch, and Xbox gamers, but oddly enough, never at the same time. Now with the latest update to the PS4 version of the game, Sony has capitulated and it is now possible for PS4 and Xbox gamers to play against each other, Switch and PS4, Xbox, Switch, and PS4, and yes, PC, Xbox, PS4, and Switch gamers, all in the same game.

This is exciting news for anyone who finds themselves struggling to find games in some of the more niche modes Rocket League offers, but also means that there will be greater competition in the busier ones too. It also means tournaments can be had between PS4 and Xbox gamers, helping to settle old rivalries and start new ones.
The next update that Psyonix will be working on bringing to the game is cross-platform parties. Allowing friends on different platforms to form parties together no matter what hardware they're running the game on will make the process of gaming with pals of all sorts much easier.
In the meantime, Psyonix recommends that you use private match functions to play with friends on a different platform.
