Ron Gilbert pleads with Disney to sell him Monkey Island rights

Do you want to see another Monkey Island game released in the future? Original developer on the first two, Ron Gilbert does. Together with Tim Schafer he helped create the franchise from the ground up at LucasArts, but today he's off making his own games at his own company.

That doesn't mean he's over his roots though.

Indeed Gilbert has been trying to get a hold of the Monkey Island license for years. However Disney, since it bought up the LucasFilm rights and acquired it, hasn't shown any interest in selling. However, it's hoped now that Disney is exiting game development and publishing - dropping Disney Infinity along the way - that it will consider selling the Monkey Island property.

Dear @Disney. Now that you're not making games, please sell me my Monkey Island and Mansion Mansion [sic] IP. I'll pay real actual money for them," said Gilbert in a Tweet.

Of course he means Maniac Mansion, but still, the man is serious.

It's not about money though. While some fans did suggest he crowd fund the idea, teaming up with his original partner in crime on the series, Tim Schafer in the process, Gilbert shot down the idea saying that he didn't need money, just the IP.

Disney has licensed out the Monkey Island property in the past to the likes of Telltale, so perhaps if it isn't willing to sell, Disney could license it to Gilbert. Of anyone who could make a game faithful to the original games, it's Gilbert.

Or Schafer. Preferably both.
