Just two days out from the planned launch of AMD's new-generation RDNA-based Radeon 5700 and 5700 XT, a new rumor has appeared claiming that AMD will drop its prices before the new GPUs hit store shelves. We don't know by how much the price cuts will reportedly be, but there are a few sources claiming it will happen, raising the question of whether this was always planned, or if it's in response to Nvidia's new Super GPU launch.
AMD's upcoming Navi graphics cards have been hotly anticipated since the launch of Nvidia's RTX Turing graphics cards in August 2018. The currently announced 5700 and 5700 XT are designed to compete favorably with Nvidia's RTX 2060 and 2070, with wonky prices that are slightly lower and slightly higher, respectively. But with the release of Nvidia's new Super RTX cards, where AMD's cards sit in the performance and cost lineup isn't so obvious. A price cut makes that even more confusing, but could make AMD's new GPUs much more competitive.
The planned pricing for the 5700 XT was $450, with the 5700 at $380. If we were to see those prices fall to $400 and $330, AMD would have some very attractive cards to offer consumers. It might not cut quite so much, depending on margins, and Videocardz hasn't confirmed any figures with its rumors, but it's an exciting prospect.
It also raises the question of whether this was always planned, or if it's purely in response to Nvidia's Super cards. It seemed clear that the Super tease came ahead of AMD's original Navi announcement, with more details coming to light once AMD had shown its hand. But maybe it didn't. Just as Nvidia clearly held on to Super until it knew how capable and where in the stack AMD's new cards would sit, perhaps AMD held off its true pricing until now.
That or Super has cause a big problem and now it's cutting in to its margins to correct it.
We only have a couple of days left to wait and see.
