Rumoured Xbox One and PS4 4K revisions coming?

One of the biggest problems with the current generation of consoles, is that despite having a big chunk of RAM, their GPUs are rather lacklustre compared to this generation's gaming PCs - and that goes doubly so for the Xbox One. This has led to all sorts of fallout with regards to frame rates and resolutions, with Microsoft's system especially struggling to hit 1080p HD on anything.

Now though, rumours have surfaced that at some point this year, a refresh of both systems will appear that will make them support 4K resolutions. Whether that's for game playing or media viewing remains to be seen, though considering the source, it's likely the latter.

This rumour comes from Forbes, via Netflix CPO, Neil Hunt, who said during CES that he expected 4K video compatible PS4s to arrive later this year. He later went on to clarify that he expects the standard console refresh of two years in to its life - around Fall this year for both Microsoft and Sony - to add 4K video playback capabilities.

Of course this would require much less of a visual upgrade than making the systems capable of playing games at 4K. That would theoretically require a monstrously powerful GPU, which would essentially put the refresh in a league of its own in terms of its ability to reproduce game visuals, making it unlikely developers would be able to utilise its full power without cutting out console early adopters.

Still, 4K video playback would be a nice selling feature for both console makers and would make buying a 4K TV more viable. That in turn would help TV sellers and content platforms like Netflix.

What do you guys think? Do you think it's likely Microsoft and Sony will update their systems to support 4k?
