For a game that's just soldiered on through the past decade of MMOs, Runescape really has proved that the free to play model is one that works very well indeed. In-fact just a few years ago it garnered a Guinness World Record for being the most popular free to play game out there. And now it's set to enter a whole new marketplace, by becoming Tablet friendly.
Jagex, the company behind the F2P fantasy RPG, announced a few things to do with the game this year, including its upgrade to an HTML5 setup, allowing for much improved visuals. On top of that though, it's made it to create the tablet/touch friendly version of the game, which Java simply wouldn't have been capable of doing effectively.
David Solari, chief marketer at Jagex said: "It stretches the imagination of what's possible on tablet right now. I mean, RuneScape would easily be the most ambitious game ever put on tablet, right? So, that excites us."
"We're used to taking on these crazy challenges and pushing things to the limit - HTML5 is a great example of that. A lot of people aren't ready to go where we've gone already, so we think we can do it."
It's also been hinted, that Jagex will bring Runescape to smartphones next and possibly to SmartTVs. They wouldn't be running the prettiest version of the game I imagine, but it's still a pretty deep game for a TV. How about an iteration of the world on a little console like the Ouya?
Where else do you guys think Runescape could conceivably end up?
