For a game that's been running for almost a decade and a half in one guise or another, especially one in the MMO genre, you would expect Runescape to have raids. They're a mainstay of this sort of game and provide a decent way for end-game players to amuse themselves and continue to challenge what they are capable of.
But it doesn't. Or hasn't at least, as the first ever raid is being added to the free to play MMO today.
Called the The Liberation of Mazcab, it will be the first of many 10 man raids that Jagex launches in the world. In it players will explore the Nemi forest as well as battle two huge bosses as they use teamwork to venture deeper into Mazcab. Beastmaster Durzag will be the first they need to go up against, but if they can defeat him, then the water elemental Yakamaru will be waiting.
These are two of the most challenging bosses that the developers have ever put in the game, so while high levels and equipment are not required to take part, they are highly recommended. Players will also need to be paying subscribers in order to take a stab at the new content.
However just because you aren't quite right for a raiding party doesn't mean you can't enjoy the new area. There's a supply escort mission system that allows safe-PvP D&D between Otot or Kanatah and a number of new quests dotted around the region.
There's even the chance to earn yourself level 90 tank armour sets.
