While it would cost nearly a $1,000 for PlayStation VR or $1,500 for an Oculus Rift and a suitable PC, Samsung announced today that its Gear VR will retail only for $99.
Poised as a low cost virtual reality headset for the masses, Gear VR will launch in November this year. There is a caveat though, the headset requires a recent Samsung smartphone to be plugged inside and act as its display and CPU.
Gear VR is compatible with Samsung's Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy S6 Edge. This puts the total cost of the headset in the $600 to $900 range, but it is not such a bad deal if you already own a suitable mobile, or planning to buy a new one.
