Scalebound has gone through three iterations in its development

Riding dragons has been something we've enjoyed doing in games for decades, but rarely does it live up to the hype. Last generation's Lair was supposed to change that, but failed due to a myriad of problems, so perhaps that's why Platinum Games upcoming tale of riding atop the back of winged beasts, Scalebound, has been revamped twice during its development.

Originally conceived way back in 2006, Scalebound initially starred a little girl and was destined for the Wii, with the plan to have the Wiimote control the actions of the dragons.

Scalebound director Hideki Kamiya revealed this during a chat with Gamespot, stating: "You were in control of the dinosaurs, you were ordering the dinosaurs around, and they’d do cool things. Then after we made Bayonetta, we started the prototype. The first thing that I made a change to was making it a dragon game."

"We changed the dinosaurs to dragons, but at that point the lead character was even weaker than [current protagonist] Drew is in the context of Scalebound. She was actually a little girl who was with these dragons."

From there, Kamiya explained that they thought she should be able to participate in the action, so they added the idea of giving the dragon-riders swords to battle it out with.

Scalebound is set for release on Xbox One in 2016.
