If you were hoping to pick up an HTC VIve headset with its new wireless module this Black Friday, consider double checking the compatibility between it and your AMD CPU, as there are reports that a few Ryzen chips are having difficulty supporting the new adaptor. HTC has acknowledged the issue and is said to be looking into it, but there is as of yet, no fix for the blue screen crash.
These issues first started cropping up at the end of September, with users on the Vive subreddit reporting that they were seeing BSOD issues on both the Vive and Vive Pro, as per PCGamesN. It took some time to narrow down the issue, but it appears that all of them were using the Vive wireless module and all of them had AMD Ryzen-based PCs.
The problem is serious enough that at this time, HTC is offering full refunds for anyone who has found themselves affected. HTC has said it will continue looking into the issue, but it has yet to release any kind of statement on what exactly the problem is, other than stating that a select "subset" of Ryzen CPUs is affected.
"We have seen and are actively looking into multiple reports of Ryzen incompatibility with Vive Wireless Adapter," HTC said. "Our current data shows this is occurring with a subset of Ryzen-based PCs. Our investigation will take time as we are working with multiple component manufacturers to identify the root cause.
"We will update the community as we learn more. In the near term, we are updating our specifications to show that certain Ryzen PCs have a compatibility issue."
At this time we don't know which AMD Ryzen CPUs are affected by this bug, but from HTC's wording, it sounds like a specific model.
