Although there was a lot of excitement to be had at this year's Blizzcon over the weekend, one of the biggest announcements was the upcoming introduction of a World of Warcraft Classic server, which would let fans of the game's early days travel back in time to when it was at its freshest. A vanilla WoW experience that hasn't been available in an official capacity since 2006. But with that project coming to fruition at some point in the future, what will become of all of the unofficial servers that offer much the same?
The hosts of the original Nostalrius server, which for a time was the most popular vanilla WoW server, were thrilled by the news. It's possible they even had a hand in bringing it about, as they met with Blizzard developers in 2016 to discuss the state of the classic WoW scene.
This is AMAZING: WoW Vanilla is coming back! :’)
Huge thanks to the community : YOU did it! https://t.co/lEdeJutvLb— NostalriusBegins (@NostalBegins) November 4, 2017
As Eurogamer points out though, not everyone was so final about their response. The Elysium project, although pleased with the news, claims that it will still continue to run in the wake of Classic's release.
Indeed it claims that it could take until 2019 to see the official WoW Classic server realized, so in the meantime it wants people to use its new server. On top of that, when WoW Classic is released, Elysium will run content from the Burning Crusade to differentiate itself.
In comparison, the Lights Hope server team has pledged to cease operations when Classic is released. That might not do much for the server's popularity in the meantime, as a potential character wipe is hardly something to get excited about.
