Sega's iconic, superspeed, blue mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, has had a number of TV shows over the years, but has never starred in his own feature film. That's all set to change though, as it's been confirmed that not only is a Sonic movie in the works, but it will blend live action with CGI to create a crossover with the real world.
Headed up by Paramount Studios, the Sonic movie will be headlined by James Marsden, most well known for his roles in the X-Men movies, as well as Enchanted and more recently, Westworld. Other notable stars working on the project include Neal Moritz, who will be producing, while Deadpool director Tim Miller is acting as executive producer.
Perhaps a little worryingly though, the film already has five writing credits to its name, according to its IBDB page. While it makes sense that original Sonic Creator and writer for many of its sequels, Hirokzu Yasuhara will be one of the writers for the film, there are already two story writers -- Evan Susser and Van Robichaux -- who have previously written wacky comedies like Fist Fight and the upcoming Wedding Crashers 2.
The screenplay is being put together by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, who are most well known for off-beat horror projects, while character writers Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima previously worked on Sonic games and TV shows.
With these people involved you could assume that the tone of the film will be pretty light, though how important classic characters like Tails, Knuckles and Dr Robotnik are, remains to be seen. The Sonic movie is slated for a rough November 2019 release.
